Chemical Peels

Chemical peeling is safe, efficacious and cost-effective

As we age, dead skin cells do not slough off as easily as when we are younger, causing the skin to appear dull. Chemical peels are a popular nonsurgical aesthetic procedure used to peel away the skin’s top layer to improve sun-damaged, unevenly pigmented and wrinkled skin.

Peels accelerate cell turnover by dissolving the tiny bonds that hold skin cells together, helping to remove dead skin on the surface of the skin that can lead to dull complexions as well as fine lines. It also strengthens collagen, one of the building blocks of the skin’s support network that gives it youthful firmness.

This improves the evenness of color and texture in your skin, creates a youthful look and restores a healthy, luminous and radiant appearance.

A chemical peel is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve the appearance of your skin. The potential result of the chemical peel depends on the type of chemical and technique used.

Although chemical peels are used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck, hands and other areas of the body. Sun exposure, acne or just getting older can leave your skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred.

Chemical Peels can be effective in the treatment of:

  • Acne or acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Irregular skin pigmentation
  • Rough skin and scaly patches
  • Certain scars
  • Sun-damaged skin

Pros:

  • No anesthesia or sedation is needed.
  • Light and medium chemical peels have minimal aftercare and recovery.
  • Deep chemical peels have long-lasting effects on treating deep wrinkles.

Cons:

  • After peel, there will be sun sensitivity and pores may appear larger.
  • Deep chemical peels may have a bleaching effect.
  • Can exacerbate skin disorders, including allergic reactions or cold sores.

Different peels may suit the need of each and every individual.  From soft peels with no downtime to deeper peels with a 7 day downtime period. Your skin, lifestyle and time will determine the choice of your product.  No matter what your choice is, remember that peels should be part of your beauty routine.

There is different options to choose from. Chemical peels listed from the weakest to the strongest for your convenience:

Mandelic Acid

Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid extracted from almonds and especially useful for skins with a combination of photoaging, acne and hyperpigmentation. Mandelic acid has antiseptic powers, differentiating it from other alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic and lactic), so it can be used on acne-affected or greasy skins. Because it is a mild peel a series of treatments are required and there is no downtime

Milk Peel

A gentle, yet medical grade peel that targets fine lines, dullness and uneven skin tone.

This peel contains a combination of:

  • Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA): Glycolic & Lactic acid,
  • Beta-hydroxy acid (BHA): Salicylic acid

AHA’s are water soluble and exfoliates  surface of the skin

  • Act as humectants and encourage skin hydration
  • Stimulate collagen synthesis
  • Soften and plums skin and even out skin complexion
  • Reduce appearance of wrinkles.

BHA’s are oil soluble  and exfoliates inside the pore

  • Are able to penetrate skin’s surface
  • Keep pores clear and unclogged.
  • Improves skin tone and texture
  • Anti bacterial and  anti inflammatory

Using an effective combination of AHA's and BHA's the milk peel helps to restore luminosity, boost collagen production and improve the appearance of your skin.

TCA Peel (trichloroacetic acid)

TCA is a medium-strength peel, and the strongest of the bunch listed here. TCA peels are no joke, so take this one seriously. This substance can successfully treat a host of skin imperfections, including sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, and acne scarring. The procedure offers effective results with minimum risk. TCA chemical peels usually take about a week to recover from, and the results are much more dramatic than lighter peels can offer.

With TCA there’ll most definitely be skin peeling and redness. This can last anywhere from 7 to 10 days, so make sure you’re doing these peels when you can afford to stay at home and hide away for a while (Unless you’re okay with looking a bit like a lizard in public).

The optiphi 30|30 Peel is an ingenious combination of 30% Glycolic Acid, 30% Ascorbic Acid and Glycyrrhetinic Acid.

Additional Information

 What is the Patch Test?

With whatever peel you start with, discuss with your aesthetician doing a patch test first.

For the patch test:

1. Apply a small amount of product on your skin in a discreet area, like the inside of your wrist or your inner arm.

2. Wait 48 hours to see if there’s a reaction.

What about Contraindications?

The following are contraindications for having a chemical peel. Please discuss with your aesthetician.

  • Use of Accutane or any other similar skin sensitising medication in the last 6 months.
  • Use of photo sensitising medication or creams.
  • Dermatitis or broken skin on the treatment site.
  • Active cold sores.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Allergies to peel ingredients (most common are nut and aspirin allergies).
  • Use of retinol and vitamin A creams within 3 days prior a peel treatment.
  • Excessive sun exposure 2 weeks prior a treatment.
  • Use of cortisone medication in the last 6 months.

Please note: if you are predisposed to cold sores these may flare up you may need to take medication for a few days before the peel to prevent a reaction.

How to prepare for your peel?

One week before peel:

  • Discontinue any topical prescriptions or any products containing Retinol or Vitamin A
  • Avoid waxing, electrolysis, hair removal creams, and laser hair removal treatments
  • Avoid sun exposure (and tanning beds)
  • Do not receive Botox or dermal fillers
  • Do not have another facial or peel treatment

Day of your peel:

  • Do not use any alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), beta hydroxy acid (BHA) and benzoyl peroxide
  • Stop any exfoliating products that may be drying or irritating

What To Expect After the Chemical Peel?

Depending upon the type of chemical peel, a reaction similar to sunburn occurs following the procedure. Peeling usually involves redness followed by scaling that ends within 3 to 7 days. Mild peels may be repeated at one to four-week intervals until you get the look you're after.

Medium-depth and deep peeling may result in swelling as well as blisters that may break, crust, turn brown, and peel off over a period of 7 to 14 days. Medium-depth peels may be repeated in 6 to 12 months, if necessary.

Can I wear makeup?

You probably won’t want to wear much foundation because it can highlight peeling and flaking.

What about Aftercare?

  • After you’ve completed a peel, you should follow up with a very bland, simple skin care routine.
  • Incorporating a hyaluronic acid product can help hydrate the daylights out of your skin, and research has shown hyaluronic acid plays an important role in wound healing ; two things which you should definitely be focusing on after a peeling session.
  • After a peel make sure you aren’t using active ingredients like Retin-A or products that include any acids, like glycolic or salicylic acid, in your skin care.
  • You also can’t go wrong with using moisturizers that strengthen and repair the moisture barrier.  An inexpensive product to use after chemical peels is Vaseline.
  • Don’t over-moisturize. When the skin is peeling and flaky, it’s normal to want to continually apply a skin oil or heavy moisturizer to comfort and alleviate dryness. While you do want to keep the skin moist because moisturizers can aid healing and you certainly don’t want the skin to crack, it’s important to know that the whole purpose of a chemical peel is to peel. The less rubbing, massaging and tugging on the skin you do, the better.
  • Don’t exfoliate with acids or enzymes. It is so important to not remove the peeling skin before its time. You must let the skin shed naturally on its schedule, not on yours. Acids and enzymes, whether in a cleanser, toner, serum, mask or moisturizer, will only irritate the skin further and possibly burn and temporarily scar the skin. While I love exfoliation, and you’ll want to get back to that two weeks after a peel to keep up the results, this is not the time.
  • Don’t use any type of retinol or prescription retinoids.. These types of products work to stimulate cell turnover. This is definitely great for the skin, but it’s what’s already occurring because of the peel. You will want to use these once your skin heals.
  • Don’t sweat too much after a chemical peel. Especially at the height of the peeling, your protective barrier is very damaged. When you sweat while working out, the salt can cause a stinging sensation which may further the irritation.
  • Don’t eat highly acidic foods.. Just as you don’t want to apply topical acids to the skin, you also don’t want acidic foods getting on to the skin. When things like tomato sauce and oranges  touch the face, they can lower the pH of the skin causing irritation.  Since the mouth area is the place where you’ll see the most amount of peeling due to facial movements from talking and yawning, this area can be very sensitive.
  • Lastly, but not least, make sure you wear sunscreen and protect your skin from the sun immediately following your peel. Your skin will be very sensitive.
